Biography
Odette Joyeux (5 December 1914 – 26 August 2000) was a French actress, playwright and novelist. She was born in Paris, where she studied dance at the Paris Opera Ballet before taking the stage. Joyeux started her film career in 1931. Her first notable film was Marc Allégret's Entrée des artistes (1938). During the 1940s she established herself as one of France's most popular cinema actresses; however, she made few film appearances after the 1950s. Joyeux is the author of some plays and essays on dance as well as a book on the life of inventor Nicéphore Niépce. She also wrote two novels aimed to inspire dance: L'Âge heureux (which was adapted to a television series) and Côté jardin. Additionally, Joyeux wrote The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful (1956) (adapted to film). She married actor Pierre Brasseur from 1935 until their divorce in 1945, by whom she had one child, Claude Brasseur, who is the father of Alexandre Brasseur. In 1958 she married director Philippe Agostini. They remained married until her death in Grimaud, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France from stroke at age 85. Le Grand Échiquier is a French variety television program created and presented by Jacques Chancel. It aired at 8:30 pm on the first channel of the ORTF from January 12, 1972 to July 12, 1972, then on the second color channel of the ORTF from September 1972 to December 1974, and finally on Antenne 2 from January 1975 to December 21, 1989. The program returned to France 2 on December 20, 2018 and is hosted by Anne-Sophie Lapix.

Youth in Revolt
1938, France, Paris, at the Superior Conservatory of Dramatic Art ("Conservatoire Supérieur d'Art Dramatique"). The first-year entrance exams are in full swing. Many applicants, few accepted. Isabelle (Janine Darcey) is one of the few chosen. She joins former students from the second and third years, including François (Claude Dauphin) and Cécilia (Odette Joyeux). They attend the drama class run by Professor Lambertin (Louis Jouvet). The young people, passionate and eager to become comedians, clash in tumultuous love affairs, because by dint of acting, they imagine that life is a farce. François, for example, is in love with Isabelle, who also loves him, but is pursued by Cecilia, his former mistress... "Put art in your life and life in your art!"
The Curtain Rises
Helene is based on Helene Wilfur, a novel by Vicki (Grand Hotel) Baum. Madeleine Renaud essays the title role, a young medical student in love with aspiring musician Pierre Regnier (Jean-Lous Barrault). Pierre's father, a noted surgeon, puts pressure on his son to give up music in favor of medicine. Unable to withstand his father's remonstrations, Pierre kills himself, prompting the grieving Madeleine to forget all about romance and dedicate her life to the cause of healing others. Wilfur avoids the usual soap-opera goo by offering realistic performances and credible dialogue (the English-language subtitles were composed by erudite film critic Herman G. Weinberg).
