Winter of 1918-1919. The power in the city passes from the hetman to the Directorate of Ukraine, then from Petliura to the Bolsheviks. Turbins and their acquaintances have to make their choice. Colonel Alexei Turbin and his brother Nicholas remain loyal to the White Movement and bravely defend it, without worrying about their lives. Elena's (née Turbin) husband, Vladimir Talberg flees shamefully from the city with the retreating German troops. In this troubled time, the family and close friends gather and celebrate the New Year. In July 1942, in the Second World War, the rearguard of the Russian army protects the bridgehead of the Don River against the German army while the retreating Russian troops cross the bridge. While they move back to the Russian territory through the countryside, the soldiers show their companionship, sentiments, fears and heroism to defend their motherland.

Otakar Vávra dedicated his latest film to events accompanying the devastation of the first World War. It takes place in representative centers of power, in the courts of Vienna, Berlin and Moscow. In parallel, it develops the fate of the Czech archivist, who will take part in the Serbian anti-Austrian branch.

The Soviet war film tells the story of the last raid by the Ukrainian partisan division named after S. A. Kovpak, led by P. P. Vershigora, into enemy territory in 1943-1944, its advance to the state border between the USSR and Poland, and its international assistance to the Polish people in their liberation from the fascist invaders.

Young Mitya, comparing his father's home photo with the picture in the newspaper, realized that he had to go to the Arctic coast to finally meet his father. But the wait for the meeting turns out to be long, because the young man himself is not ready for this, and then, having personally learned about life at the polar reserve airfield, he is no longer so irreconcilable and does not attach such crucial importance to the meeting with his father.

The heroes of the film are students of a pedagogical university, those who, after a year or two, have to carry knowledge to schoolchildren, "to sow the rational, good, eternal." In the meantime, student practice. True, the practice is not quite ordinary, because for the first time students leave far from the walls of their own university, for the first time they meet with students in the classroom not in the presence of their teachers, those with whom life encounters them daily at the institute, but with those who have been working for more than a year at school.

The movie takes us back to the times of the Civil War, when the young Soviet power was defended by the first heroes of this terrible internecine war. Red commanders Semyon Budyonny and Kliment Voroshilov managed to gather an entire army of "red cavalrymen" - thus began the history of the campaigns "through valleys and up hills" of the legendary First Cavalry Army.

The body of a young woman is found in a construction quarry. The deceased is Vera Topilina, secretary to the head of the Main Directorate, Menshutina. Moscow Criminal Investigation Department inspectors Vasilyev and Losev investigate the causes of the woman's death. Ultimately, the investigation leads the operatives to major players in the shadow economy.

The film is based on real events and tells about a major accident that occurred during the construction of another Leningrad metro station in the spring of 1974.

The social ferment in late 19th century Russia which led to the 1917 Russian Revolution is movingly portrayed in this lengthy historical drama, which is very faithful to the 1907 novel The Mother by the celebrated Marxist writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). In the story, "the mother" (Inna Tchourikova) has no other recourse than to watch her decent, kindly husband turn into an animalistic, drunken brute as a result of working in the inhuman conditions of a steel mill in the town of Sormovo. When he begins to express his suppressed rage by beating her, she is defended by her teenaged son Pavel (depicted Viktor Rakov as an adult, Sacha Chichonok as a boy). After his father's death, Pavel is forced to go to work in the same factory. However, Pavel and his friends begin investigating Marxism and socialist thought, and work to organize their fellow workers.
