Marta Vendyšová grew up in a wealthy family and married a well-known and successful architect. Soon after the start of World War I, she received news that her husband had been killed at the front. Among the things his friend from the front gave her was a medallion with a child's face, which she had never seen on her husband. She decides to track down the donor.

At the center of the crime story is the very large Kremp family, living in the family villa with other relatives and a subtenant. The parents had four adult children, two sons and two daughters, one of whom recently died. The investigation focuses on the recent death of their son Jan. The young man was considered the family "fool", whom no one except his mother liked, because he played various mischievous tricks on everyone. However, his death, as Captain Exner investigates, was not an unfortunate accident, but a murder. Who could have been interested in his death? Was the murderer someone from the immediate family? A story about the problems of an aging high school history professor, Barchánek, and his teenage son. Barchánek teaches at a technical school in the same class as his son Honza. The dramatic fate of a girl forced to live someone else's life...

The television production captures the last decade of the life of the now world-renowned painter Karel Purkyně (1834 - 1868) and his struggle for the possibility of creative expression. After studying in Paris, he returns to Prague. He is not recognized, has no success and actually lives on the support of his father, the famous physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkyně. The only understanding he finds is in his admirer Maria, whom he marries. But he loses her too due to his emotional involvement with another woman. He dies too young and leaves behind a work whose artistic value will only be appreciated much later, at the beginning of the twentieth century.
