The action takes place in Victorian England in the last quarter of the 19th century. 27-year-old amateur detective Sherlock Holmes becomes a bystander to a crime along with Dr. John Watson, a military doctor who has just returned from the war in Afghanistan. During the investigation, Watson, not yet having an apartment in London, settles with Holmes in Mrs. Hudson's «half board», and then takes part in the affairs of his new friend. Watson gives Holmes boxing lessons. Watson himself is an experienced boxer, able to deal with several opponents with his bare hands. In addition, he is an excellent marksman. Considering Holmes a genius, the doctor decides to tell the whole world about his talent and the mysteries he revealed in his stories, where he often embellishes the events («the true story» of which the series presents). Watson is taught to embellish events by the editor-in-chief of the «Morning Chronicle».

The film covers the heroic defence of the Brest Fortress, which was attacked during the first strike of German invaders on June 22 1941. The story describes the events of the first days of the defence, including the three main resistance zones, headed by the regiment commander, Pyotr Mikhailovich Gavrilov, the commissar Efim Moiseevich Fomin and the head of the 9th frontier outpost, Andrey Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov. Many years later veteran Alexander Akimov again recalls the memories of the time, when he, then a 15 year old Sasha Akimov was deeply in love with the beautiful Anya and suddenly found himself in the middle of the bloody events of war.

April 1959. Tanya Meshcherskaya, who grew up in an orphanage, goes to Moscow to her father, academician Viktor Ryabinsky. She has a letter with her and an antique brooch left over from her mother, which is being stolen. Vikenty is happy to find a daughter, as he loved her mother, but his wife takes Tanya with hostility. She tries to find out the details from Vikenty's sister, but she doubts that Vikenty is Tanya's father.

For the last three years police Lieutenant Mikhail Solovyev has been chasing a maniac. The capital is petrified by this scourge of society who is leaving dead bodies in his wake. At the moment of his capture and arrest, a maniac crashes into Mikhail, causing the lieutenant`s death...Soloviev comes back to life after the accident and discovers that he has moved back in time and ended up in 1979 in his father`s body. Understanding nothing about this acci- dent, the lieutenant is trying to adapt to his new life. Coincidently, he works as a soviet police officer at the same time he is discover- ing his chances to get back...
