In the Faroe Islands, a team of biologists is studying these marine plants with the aim of improving salmon farming and avoiding the need for drugs or chemicals. In Munich, others are working on a tiny algae whose high oil content could eventually replace petroleum. The carbon fiber obtained from it is a real match for fossil fuels. In France, a tower resembling a Morris column is being used to purify the air. The tower absorbs one tonne of CO₂ per year - the equivalent of several dozen trees - and converts it into oxygen.

The lakes of Northern Italy are considered as places of longing. The series "Beyond the Alps" shows the five largest of them as natural habitats and at the same time introduces people who are closely connected to the lakes. Narrated by Eva Mattes, the world of the lakes is portrayed in high-class pictures. Five camera teams were on the road for 150 days, helicopter shots show the special features of this landscape from a bird's eye view.

Do we have enough resources and knowledge to effectively combat fires in the future? In the summer of 2018, heat waves and long months of drought caused uncontrolled wildfires around the world. Were the droughts a harbinger of tomorrow's climate? Fires occur in places where no one would expect them—as in Sweden in 2018. Climatologists and fire researchers are looking for ways to combat the growing threat of fires. In Spain, scientists are testing a model that uses cypress trees as a green fire wall. In Germany, they have developed a unique system for early fire detection. The Firewatch system is equipped with sensors that are a thousand times more sensitive than the human eye and can detect smoke from several kilometers away. As part of the Firebird mission, the German Aerospace Center has launched two satellites into orbit that use infrared cameras to detect areas of elevated temperature on the Earth's surface.

Every year on Earth, hundreds of millions of hectares of vegetation are swept away by flames. During the summer of 2018, Europe experienced a foretaste of the foreseeable consequences of climate change, with record temperatures and extreme drought leading to forest fires on an unprecedented scale, particularly in Sweden. How can we better prevent and control these fires, over 90% of which are man-made? Climatologists and specialists are joining forces to provide the best possible response to this threat. From increased prevention among young people, to innovative detection systems and the planting of cypress trees to block the flames, methods are being studied to combat this scourge from France to Spain and Germany.
