A young sailor finds himself trapped in the labyrinthine mansion of his occultist uncle, along with a number of eccentric and mysterious relatives who all seem to be harboring a dark secret.

Situated after the war in Antwerp, Belgium. The port is developing and old villages like Oosterdonk have to be torn down because more space is needed for the industry. The show depicts life around 1960 before the village disappeared and at the same time is about life 35 years on at the funeral of one of the protagonists, long after the village is gone.

A policeman neglects his young, attractive wife because of his professional duties. Soon, he has to face the fact that she deceives him. It seriously complicates the case he is working on: attractive young women are brutally killed by means of a pencil rammed into their noses until the brain is pierced.

Pauline is a 'little girl of 66 years old'. She is mentally retarded and been cared after by her sister Martha. If they decide to take her to an institution, Pauline will be the only heir.

Along the way, he encounters workers, drifters, priests and other outsiders who guide him deeper into his obsessive search. Adapted from a novel by Hubert Lampo, the film blends psychological drama with magical realism, creating an ambiguous world where madness, grief and imagination merge, and where it remains uncertain whether Kasper’s visions are delusions or glimpses of another reality.
