During the final days of the First World War, Officer Menis does his duty in defending the battle flag of the defeated Austro-Hungarian empire, while his fellow troops, a motley gang recruited from several different countries not loyal to the royal family, simply try to survive by any means possible.
Summer 1914, Vienna. Franz, a handsome young hussar lieutenant, falls in love with Sissi, daughter of the Austrian Generalissimo. Shortly afterwards, the First World War breaks out. It provides Franz with the perfect opportunity to earn his stripes and claim the girl's hand in marriage.
The film tells the story of a young Jewish woman who, during the Nazi era, is hidden by her friend, treated in a hospital using her identity papers, and dies there. As a result, her friend loses her official identity. For the first time, the question of the behavior of friends, neighbors, caretakers, and strangers during the persecution of Vienna's Jewish population is raised. Ostensibly, "The Other Life" is a gripping play on identity, but overall, it is an astonishing demonstration of the civil courage of Alexander Lernet-Holenia (1897-1976), who, shortly after the war, addressed the then-taboo subject of the persecution of the Jews in his literary work. The ambitious film studio of the Theater in der Josefstadt, which did not last long, took up the material and filmed it with the theater's actors.
Munich cab driver Herbert Sponer picks up American businessman Jack Mortimer at the train station. Suddenly Mortimer is shot while driving and Sponer has to try to avoid being suspected as the perpetrator.

The jealous star conductor Montemayor knows that his beautiful younger wife, Winifred, is cheating on him with an American named Jack Mortimer. After the concert rehearsal, he takes a taxi to the train station, sees Mortimer and shoots him at an intersection from the backseat of his taxi. The shot is not heard during the traffic noise. The taxi driver, Sponer, sitting in his car with the now-dead Mortimer, goes into a panic.
