This monumental work by William Shakespeare, published in 1592, consists of three plays, 80 scenes, and 12,000 verses that recount the 50-year reign of this king of England. Against the backdrop of the Hundred Years' War and the internal strife linked to the civil war of the "Two Roses," this dramatic episode in English history saw the royal houses of York and Lancaster torn apart in the race for power.
