Panoramic life of a Moldovan village in the second half of the twentieth century.

XVIII century. Moldova under Turkish yoke. The local nobility collaborates with the enslavers. Throughout the district in Moldova, the fame of a detachment of haiduks under the leadership of Gruya thundered, instilling fear in the lords and boyars. But Gruya was killed. Imagine the surprise of the authorities when they learned that a new Gruya had appeared and was preparing revenge.

Summer of 1940. The architect returns from Bucharest to his native Bessarabia with a firm desire to live outside politics. However, life forces him to make a choice.

Archaeologists have found on the island of Eagle remnants of slave shackles. On the expedition, rumors of an old legend spread about the figure of Achilles, who sometimes appeared on the local rock, and who was helping the sailors to find a safe fairway in bad weather. The expedition after a long search finds nothing and moves out, but the leader decides to stay. And after a while, he discovers a mysterious state created by runaway slaves...

Senior Lieutenant Vasily Bodrug and his wife Evgenia arrive at the border outpost after the wedding to serve. An intruder was killed while trying to cross the state border, and border guard Vaskov was injured during detention. Vasily, risking his life, detains an accomplice of the violator. But a complete surprise for the lieutenant was the arrival of his former lover Vyacheslav to his wife.

On his birthday, Andrei Răzlog, chairman of a large-scale Moldovan kolkhoz association and a former Red Army fighter, recalls his life, the main events of which are intertwined with his village's struggle against local kulakism and post-war devastation.

At the heart of the story is a rural schoolteacher who, in 1944, leaves his native Bessarabia as the Red Army advances with heavy fighting. The gentle, cultured Sebastian Radu has every reason to avoid meeting the so-called liberators. And not just because one of the new regime’s first measures will be a background check, and Radu will have to write “noble” in the “social origin” field. The point is, our protagonist already has some experience dealing with representatives of the “new world.”

A film about the former village of Crasna Putnei, located near Vicovu de Sus, Suceava County. The figuration was made by the villagers from Crasna, with the beautiful traditional Romanian costumes from Bucovina.
