In 1920s Poland, a police commissioner leads the investigation into a series of brutal murders of young boys as the case grows increasingly unsettling and personal.

A small fishing village between the sea and the lake. One day, when all the men went out to catch, a viper bitten Grandpa Filip and little Madzia was severely injured by a misfire. Holidaymakers with a motorboat refuse to help. Filip decides to take the girl to the doctor himself.

Set at the end of the war. A hot-headed colonel tries to force his men on to heroics although the war is almost over. A war-weary lieutenant tries to muffle his efforts but he keeps on with his men and is killed fighting in the front lines, all his men decide to get his body.

A university professor leads a lonely and sad life as a retiree. He often goes for walks in the cemetery. One day, he meets Ania there, the daughter of his friend Andrzej, who died tragically in the mountains. The girl lives with her children in a student dormitory, living a very modest life. Her husband left a few years ago to work abroad. Ania stayed in the country to finish her studies. Meeting the girl radically changes the professor's barren existence. Despite his advanced age and lack of experience, he takes on the care of the children to enable Ania to go to England for a management course.

Two noblemen live in one castle, which they both own half of. After a wall dividing both halves of the castle gets damaged they start an intense rivalry.

Ryszard Ochódzki receives a special assignment for UB - infiltrating the "Solidarity" party branch in Suwałki. His arriving there coincides with the imposition of martial law on Poland.
