A poor nobleman, Platon Samanishvili, has a big family. One day, his long-time widowed father, Bekina, tells him that he'd like to remarry. Platon has a problem now: if his father gets a child, he has to share his already small land property.

In a poor village, a farmer who goes to the field becomes ill and is brought home unconscious. Relatives and villagers come to visit him, to express compassion to his mother. But sympathy is accompanied by the fear that this illness will spread in their families as well.
