Featured were the finalists from The Ultimate Fighter: Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz in the Middleweight division and a fight between Keith Jardine and Matt Hamill.

The event was the sixth event that the UFC has hosted in Newark, New Jersey and was headlined by a middleweight bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and former Strikeforce Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.

The PFL 9 mixed martial arts event for the 2021 season of the Professional Fighters League was held on August 27, 2021. This was the third event of the playoffs with the Featherweight and Light Heavyweight divisions divisions competing. This event aired on ESPN2, with the prelims airing on ESPN+.
