Set in Nara, the seat of power in Japan in the early 8th century. The power of the imperial court has been split into two warring factions, Prince Nagaya who protects the right for imperial rule by direct decent, and the Fujiwara clan who favor giving more power to the clans related to the imperial family. Children of the warring factions, Prince Asukabe, Princess Asukabe and Obito no Miko are friends from a young age. Prince Asukabe and Princess Asukabe rebel against expectations, drawn to each other....
The Akazas are a blue-collar family living in a working-class neighborhood of Tokyo. Older brother Inosuke is a carpenter who works for his father Shinobu's construction business. Younger sister Momoko is a truckdriver. Passions run high in the Akaza household and the two siblings are constantly bickering. One day, Momoko reveals she had a miscarriage but refuses to say who the father is.

Vittorio is the young lord of Il Lago, which is always at war with Bolzano, a neighboring city-state of Northern Italy. In one conflict, Vittorio kills the old lord of Bolzano, and takes his daughter Clarice prisoner. Clarice is actually the bastard daughter of the old lord, and expects Vittorio to be a fat old man. She's rather surprised when she sees the real Vittorio. Vittorio, to everyone's shock, orders an immediate wedding.

Risa Onodera, played by Miyazaki, had a groom runaway on the wedding day four years ago. Her father, Shusaku (Matsushige) and her mother, Machiko (Matsuzaka), built a large two-family house to live with their daughter and her new family. One day, Risa says that she has been proposed to, Shusaku is surprised to see that face. This is because Kotaro (Nagayama) was a former subordinate of his workplace and was now his boss. Although he wants to congratulate his daughter's marriage, Shusaku wonders if he can live with his boss. Where is the love between Risa and Kotaro? Can the two get married? Can Risa and Kotaro, Shusaku and Machiko become a family?
