Villa Orfeus is a peculiar old house that has become a treasure for the neighborhood's residents. It is a sanctuary where the house's residents are allowed to be different, to be themselves in an alienated world. Lydia Wiljengren (Ellen Gottschalch), the widow of a wealthy music dealer, owns Villa Orfeus. She has gradually squandered her entire fortune on her fondness for musical people. The only condition for living in the house is that they can either play an instrument or sing.
In 1890, Pontus, the starving writer, wanders the streets of Christiania, in search of love and a chance to get his work published. All he meets is defeat and suffering while his sense of reality is withering. One moment he is delighted and the next he curses everybody. All the time he manages to maintain human dignity and pride.

Part two takes place in 1910 and finds an amorously unfaithful wife taking on her many lovers while her unsuspecting husband lurks nearby. The final part finds a count and countess engaging in extramarital affairs in France during the 1840s.

The attic of a city house is the home to a colony of artists. Among them is a writer, whose corpus is larger than her output. We also meet a hard-of-hearing poet who can still hear the grass growing. There's a painter, a sculptor and more. All are penniless - hoping that one day they will experience their breakthrough. "The Seventh Heaven", as the corridor is called, also houses two prominent residents, FyrtĂĄrnet and Bivognen. They have set up a small diner and engage lively with the artist from the colony.

In a small street on the outskirts of town, there are two small shops next to each other: Nummesen's herbalist's shop and Mikkelsen's plumber's shop. Sven Gjeholm is a writer of sex books. His wife finds this a bit odd, considering he's not really into sex. Since Sven can't get any peace to write his books because of journalists and other curious folks who want to see how a sex writer lives, he decides to move to the small Norwegian town of Mårböosen. However, the town's residents have already heard about Sven and his writing, and he is not welcomed with open arms. Soon, however, the town's residents realize that Sven attracts a lot of tourists, and when Sven decides to flee once again, good advice is hard to come by. Sven has no choice but to stay in town.
In the vicinity of Copenhagen, a group of pensioners live in a very large villa. The owner, Doctor Bach, has invited a colleague, the young master Peter Park , to visit him. They have a common interest that they could discuss during his stay. When he arrives, it is at a most inconvenient time. He is greeted by the doctor's sister, the almost deaf Camilla, who does not understand much of what is going on around her. The doctor has completely forgotten that he invited Park, but he settles him into the villa nonetheless. Here, Park meets the doctor's granddaughter, the young and beautiful Lise Bach (Henriette Normann), to whom he is immediately attracted. When Lise asks her grandfather if he is going out again, the doctor explains that he is going to the cinema with his good friend Friis.

"Modern vaudeville," where the entire story takes place at Dyrehavsbakken. In an impressionistic style, it tells the story of the waiter Mowitz, who ponders whether he loves the singer Myrna and what true love really is. He ponders too long; Myrna instead becomes engaged to the pianist Bertram, who can get her into the Circus Revue. Mowitz also takes too long to discover the singer Lillian's interest, so his friend Max snatches her up instead, while Mowitz can continue his search for the one and only.
This is a film about the stuff dreams are made of, yet, there is nothing elevated in this concept, on the contrary. The characters around the bar Strudsen (the ostrich) are doing what ostriches do, hiding themselves from the threats of life and keeping their dreams to themselves. Scriptwriter Benny Andersen being a poet is rendering a loving portrait of a number of persons, who fail to try to make their dreams come true, possibly not being sufficiently dissatisfied with their life after all. The manager would like a bar of his own but dare not admit to it, the butcher would like to be an opera singer, the window cleaner (sorry, window polisher) is secretly in love with the bar lady, but dare not show it and the pianist willingly listens to all the different dreams being presented to him. This film was the best accomplished movie from Henning Carlsen since his debut with 'Sult'.
FyrtĂĄrnet and Bivognen are gardeners at a residence for young women. Here they are friends with budding actress Eva, but when the three reveal one evening during the performance of an illegal theater performance, they are kicked out. By detours, they get on board a schooner, where Fy and Bi play up to dance and get seasick, while Eva still has her course set against the sloping boards.

Miss April Bergen is a skilled nurse with a secret crush on Dr. Vagn Jochumsen. Unfortunately, he is not really interested in anything other than his career, where he has just discovered a new vaccine. But then he has to go to Greece to exchange experiences with his Greek colleagues. And April is going with him. Follow Miss April's countless maneuvers in this sparklingly funny film adaptation. It is pure Danish folk comedy spiced with Greek folklore and sunny humor.
