The show was meant to compete with those on West German television. To this end it was fairly successful even attracting a following in parts of West Germany which could receive Eastern TV. Its production values were high. Apart from song and dance numbers and appearances from East German celebrities, almost every broadcast featured well-known stars from the west, often after their popularity had peaked in their home countries.

Although the familiar sign "Today closed" hangs outside the Zur schönen Aussicht restaurant, it's not at all quiet inside. A letter from the travel agency causes a stir: A representative signs up to offer the beautiful view a package deal. Much to the chagrin of the landlady, as she has a house full of guests and is booked up for several years in advance. Nikolaus Plaschke in particular, a regular guest and silent admirer of the landlady, fears for his beloved vacation bed. So he devises bold plans to scare the travel agent away.
The November Revolution of 1918 in Germany, famine and social upheaval evoke a response from the young Soviet government in Russia. To provide food assistance, trains with bread are being formed. One of them, on the personal instructions of V.I. Lenin is accompanied by the young revolutionary Tatyana . On the way, she meets a former German prisoner of war, Kurt . A romantic relationship arises between them. The train with bread, despite all the difficulties, was delivered. In a clash with a detachment of counter-revolutionary German troops, Tatyana was wounded. She returns to Moscow, and Kurt goes to Berlin to continue the revolutionary struggle.

The chairwoman of the LPG "GebrĂĽder Grimm", Mrs. Holle, is pleased to have gained two new workers: Maria Gold and Maria Pech. The two have very different working styles. Maria Gold listens to the first call of the oven and the apple tree and goes about her work so carefully and skillfully that she only produces quality goods. Maria Pech, on the other hand, delivers charred bread and her apples are good for the jam factory at best.

Like his (film) hero, Krug works as a steel melter, does artwork, sings and acts, and is sent to drama school. Like his hero, who behaves anarchically and conspicuously, Krug is soon expelled from school.
