The title of the Finnish film Elokuu translates to August. Directed by Matti Kassila, one of Finland's premiere filmmakers, Elokuu was adapted from a novel by Nobel prize winning finnish author F.E. Sillanpää. Simply put, the story concerns the decline and fall of a once-proud family, thanks to the alcoholism of its paterfamilias. Toivo Makela delivers a powerfully effective performance as the inebriated protagonist, avoiding the usual "drunken" cliches. The overlong running time, coupled with the downbeat nature of the subject, limited the film's worldwide appeal.

For six hundred years Sweden had controlled most of Finland until the war with Russia that ended in 1809, when Finland became a Grand Duchy of the Russian Czar. This period drama is set during that early 19th-century war and focuses on one of its heroes, Sven Tuuva. Sven is a decent yet not too brilliant soldier, and his exploits are partly balanced here by the charms of a compatriot.

Urpo, an alcoholic former priest, has been in prison for manslaughter. During this time, his partner Meeri has been forced to resort to prostitution. The counterfeit money printing plates are desperately searched by the gang and our heroes try to hide from them by travelling to Mallorca, where some of the local hoods try to kill them and retake the missing plates.

One night when the couple are in bed, Reino climbs a ladder and attempts to force his way into their room; he falls and breaks his neck, and to avoid scandal Sten hides the body. But the strain of guilt ruins the romance, and Elsie contacts the police, who arrest her lover.

An ex-finnish army officer Kari Kivi returns to Finland after 12 years of absence. He is quickly hired by a businessman named Östermalm to be his stand-in to escape the ring of spies threatening his life. Many beautiful women cross Kivi's path before the spy ring is eventually crushed.

Mirja finds her grandmother's old hat in the attic and sets off singing along the road with it on her head. On her journey, she meets composer couple Theodor and Thea Tekonen and gets a ride from hat maker Kosonen and his son Ilmari, who falls in love with Mirja. However, the girl continues her journey alone and, with the help of the circus troupe leader, gets to perform at Linnanmäki, where Ilmari finds her again.

Old Virtanen is a respected night watchman at a textile factory and a single father to his daughter Aino, who is about to graduate from high school. The heartless factory owner Kuusela fires Virtanen, who is forced to look for a new job. When Aino, who is in love with the manager's son Veikko, disappears after her graduation party, her father, who has fallen ill with worry, is overcome with despair.

Eemeli leaves the countryside for Helsinki to obtain tax money for the bailiff who is pursuing him. In the capital, he becomes the assistant driver of Andersson, a cab driver. One night while driving, Eemeli meets Vesa and his little sister Jaana, whom Andersson and his granddaughter Katriina take into their family as foster children.

A radio reporter from Helsinki arrives in the village of Kankkula just before Midsummer to conduct interviews. The old sheriff demands that his nephew Lauri, who serves as the village policeman, continue the generations-old tradition of arresting the old master of Tippavaara, whom the sheriff believes to be brewing moonshine. However, Lauri is in love with the old man's niece Leena, and the couple's plans to get engaged conflict with Lauri's duties.

Juha lives together with younger woman Marja. Juha loves her, but Marja seems to belong to somewhere else. Things get complicated when casanova Shemeikka arrives from strange lands and takes Marja away with him.
