Although Ayu has been honest, Sutra is continuously haunted by the fact that Ayu was not a virgin when they married, even after five years of marriage. Then when he finds out that Ayu met her old friend, Manaseh, Sutra becomes increasingly suspicious and his mental state grows unstable. He himself has a relationship with Rhoda Darsono, who has a very possessive nature. This disturbs Sutra, who only wants to have fun with her. Just when Sutra starts to realise his mistake, he is murdered.

Set in Bandang in early 1930s, story concerns a young man who joins the anti-Dutch freedom movement. When his best friend is shot by police, he vows to assassinate the chief of police who gave the order to fire.

He gains a respectable position as a cleric, then marries the sister of the Emperor, Ratu Pembayun, and Ratu Ayu, the widow of Pati Unus, who died in the battle against the Portuguese in Malacca. The Portuguese want to establish a fort at Sunda Kelapa. But the Sultanate of Demak is determined to wage a war against the Portuguese. Fatahillah is elected as the commanding officer, and he conquers Sunda Kelapa, and changes its name to Jayakarta, which later became Jakarta.

Set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation and traditional Betawi culture, the story centers on Sayuti, a brash local champion consumed by jealousy over his dancer girlfriend, Nonon. His insecurity deepens with the arrival of Komar, an educated urbanite who quickly gains the villagers' admiration. Unbeknownst to Sayuti, Komar and his comrade Malik are actually resistance fighters operating undercover within the Japanese ranks to steal weapons. When Sayuti impulsively decides to prove his worth by attacking the occupiers directly, his reckless heroism threatens to blow the cover of Komar's carefully planned operation.
