When young Gonga and his cousin Bart find a suitcase full of rusty crosses in a scrap yard, Bart gets the idea to turn them into neon crucifixes and sell them door-to-door to the gullible inhabitants of Tbilisi. Their crusade through the suburbs of the city becomes a quest for love and friendship.
A young man leaves his village to go into the city to audition to enter a dance company. He then is involved in illegal activities such as boxing and sleeping with men for money. Unwillingly, he falls in love with a man and suddenly is accepted in and starts dancing in the company. But his life will turn upside down when his lover goes to war and he returns to his village.

Winter which was not there’ can be seen as a metaphor for the liberation of an individual from his or her own history. In the film, a man watches a monumental concrete sculpture of a man being hoisted out of the sea. The sculpture is clearly reminiscent of a classic heroic monument but in a strange, and somewhat uncanny way, the face and figure of the sculpture look amazingly like the man who’s watching it rise out of the sea.
