Manji, a highly skilled samurai, becomes cursed with immortality after a legendary battle. Haunted by the brutal murder of his sister, Manji knows that only fighting evil will regain his soul. Rika Inaba is a beautiful and strong-headed director at the Teito Television Broadcasting Company. Ever since she was young, she had dreamed of becoming the best news reporter in the business, but on into her fifth year with the TV station, she finds to her dismay she's been transferred to a lighter fare, information program where she is assigned to report on the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Meanwhile, Daisuke Sorai had just reached his long-sought goal of becoming an aerobatics pilot only to injure his leg, crushing his chances at ever becoming a member of the elite Blue Impulse flying team. He gets assigned to the force's public relations desk and subsequently finds himself attached to Rika in the role of attendant. Sorai and Rika differ on just about everything; their views, their mindset. But they share one thing: their childhood dreams have been shattered and they've hit a wall in life. From there, a mutual understanding begins to germinate, drawing them toward each other and toward the discovery of a new dream.
One day, struggling model Kurusu Reina suddenly has the special vision to see images of murderers come to her mind. Asano Kazama, a First Investigative Division detective, pushed into temporary suspension because of a case, unluckily meets Reina. He makes use of her unique ability to solve difficult cases.
Haga Ineko stopped being a school teacher for she was about to get married. When she is suddenly dumped by her to-be husband, she loses her way, and starts drinking. One day, an old friend approaches with a job offer. She would be a substitute teacher in a class on which several teachers gave up without an apparent reason. She reluctantly takes the job only to discover that there are several brutal bullying cases inside the class. Even she eventually starts being anonymously threatened due to her opposing posture against such cases. She now has to identify and reprimand them while at the same time protecting weaker students. The word "Hagane" on the title is a nickname which comes from Haga (her surname) and Ne (from Ineko, her name), but is actually a pun with the actual word hagane (which means steel, denoting how she must be in order to resist as a teacher). Young lovers Mari and Atsushi elope to the Big City that is Tokyo, unfortunately when they run out of money, both need to make some harsh choices. Mari stumbles upon selling ‘Party Tickets’ (for Swingers parties to be exact…), before being drawn into the sex industry to make ends meet. Meanwhile, Atsushi becomes a ‘Scout Man’ – effectively a recruitment agent for the sex industry (i.e. procuring young women for nude modelling, porn movies etc.). The consequences of their respective decisions will ultimately take it’s toll on their young lives.
