The fact that a person is neither what other people say about them nor their own description of themselves. And photographs and moving images are nothing more than representations.

Phillip Hochmair is a young, successful actor with engagements at big theatres in Vienna and Hamburg. His life is marked by learning new texts by heart, rehearsals, and performances, thus gradually losing contact with the reality of everyday life. Only when he meets his uncle Walter, whom he didn't know about before and establishes an ambiguous friendship with, and also faces his neighbour Victor’s destiny, he discovers with full force how cruel the daily battle for survival can be.

Artmann at one point in this film, which his daughter Emily Artmann and his niece Katharina Copony shot in his apartment in Vienna in the fall of 2000. A few weeks before his death, we can listen to the great poet and writer in this deeply empathetic final portrait as he reflects on art and his understanding of literary work in a small, sparsely furnished room. “At the beginning of writing there is absolute silence.”

Brenner Pass, Alpine border, spring 2016: the Austrian government announces the construction of a border fence, expecting a shift of the refugee routes to Italy after the Balkan route is closed. The residents fear the fence just as much as the supposedly threatening influx of foreigners to their homeland. Two years later, the fence is still rolled up in a container, as the inrush of refugees never occurred.
