The film documents one of the largest Indian religious fairs, the Kumbh Mela, which is held at the confluence of the rivers Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. The action is seen through the eyes of Shubhendu Chatterjee who has come to the Mela not out of any religious sentiment but to see and understand people and seek the reason why “….multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining.” (Mark Twain after visiting the 1895 Mela)

This is a story about a horse named Siraj. After the death of Sundarlal's parents, a person gave him shelter who had a horse named Siraj. When that person died Sundarlal joined a circus company with Siraj. There Sundarlal meets Rupa and both fall in love. After some time Sundar and Rupa leaves the job with Siraj. But Siraj, forever faithfull to Sundarlal becomes ill and dies after winning a race.

Prafulla is beautiful and righteous but is mistreated by her in laws because of her poverty. Prafulla comes to a fortune by chance and is guided by Bhabani Pathak, a nationalistic religious leader to use this fortune in the cause of justice. Gradually incidents take such a turn that her erstwhile tormentors, i.e. her in laws come under her power and the movie ends with reconciliation.

On the day of wedding, Siraj's affection for Mou comes out in the open and everyone regrets the behaviour meted out to Siraj.

The film is a family drama of Arijit, his wife and son. A bolt from the blue brings troubles to the peaceful household. During a tour in an accident Arijit's wife dies. This puts the family into a state of shock. But time is the greatest healer, they say. Arijit becomes a successful businessman but his villainous brother lands Arijit into a disastrous financial situation. Arunava loves a doctor Indrani. Suddenly it is revealed that Arijit's wife was not dead but had just lost her memory in the accident. She was in a ashram for several years. When she got her memory back she came to her house but here she saw Aparna. She was heart-broken and wanted to return to the ashram. Complications build up which are finally settled and the daughters-in-law return to their respective and rightful homes.
