A man sits down to watch a football match, which seems to consist of the players being violently mutilated in various inventive ways. The players then leave the football pitch and invade the spectator's flat.
The inner drama of Jiří Mánka, a forty-year-old cashier at Živnostenská banka, who has artistic talent, both musical and painterly. After his experiences on the battlefields of World War I, he chose a job that provides him with a very good livelihood, but does not satisfy his ambitions. He lives alone with his mother and gets along well with his brother Teodor, with whom he shares a love of music. Jiří's life is shaken up by a chance encounter with a young, attractive girl named Adéla, with whom he feels relaxed and rejuvenated, at least at first...
Three soldiers desert and take refuge in an ancient, crumbling castle where three veiled maidens welcome them with a sumptuous feast, on the sole condition that they neither lift a veil nor lay a hand on their hosts during the night. Only one, Jakub, keeps his vow and is rewarded by a freed princess and a magical token that grants him three extra lives.
Olga, a young and sensitive governess, comes to an impoverished aristocratic family full of ideals and determination to love the children entrusted to her. Lonely among people, she experiences the feeling of not belonging anywhere. Neither among the arrogant nobility nor among the servants. She experiences many situations that hurt and humiliate her, but at the same time teach her lessons for her future life.
1950. While some people enthusiastically build a totalitarian state, others flee from it in terror. And some disappear. Just like Jarmila, the sister of doctor Marie, disappeared. Although a letter arrived from her in West Germany, it was addressed to Maruška, a name Jarmila never called her sister. At first, there is only an almost impossible-to-prove suspicion, then the intuition of a loving sister, and so Marie sets out to follow in her footsteps.
Young married couple Hana and Dan form a chamber duo. They are young and have their whole lives ahead of them. She sings and he accompanies her on the piano. Hana wins a prestigious competition and immediately attracts interest, or rather, interest in both of them. The agency sends them to concerts all over the country. Some places are great, others terrible. But above all, they have to travel quickly before they are pushed out by winners of other competitions. And Dan and Hana travel and play and are happy. And then one night, on the way back, it all ends. A moment of inattention, a drunk man stumbles along a forest road. Hana stops, Dan finds out that the man is alive, everything is fine. Or is it?
