The story stretches from 1863 to 1945. Its main characters are representatives of the Pasternik family, who live in the fictional village of Wielowice near Pszczyna. The protagonist of the first three episodes is Franciszek Pasternik, the following parts tell about the fate of his many children and even more grandchildren. The viewer follows their history against the backdrop of great changes and historical events that influenced the lives of Silesian Poles. So there is the Kulturkampf, Prussian rugi, the revolution of 1905, World War I and the Silesian Uprisings.

A tough, stubborn and devoid of illusions cop in a story of love, hatred, death and human emotions, so strong that they push people to crime.

Second half of September 1939. Lt. Brejer, along with a detachment of his sappers, receives orders to blow up the bridge. The promised explosives do not arrive. So Brejer gets the order to withdraw and reunite with the rest of the division. Along the way, suffering hunger and discomfort along with his soldiers, he joins various divisions, collects survivors and fights. From a German prisoner of war, he finally learns that the Soviets have entered Poland. Finally, he and his men manage to reach his home unit, but that unit has just surrendered to the Germans.

Władysław is declared a hero after controlling panic in a bank archive fire.

The main character of the film is a little boy named Marek, who from an enemy of nature becomes its devoted friend. Before this happens, however, fate plays quite a trick on him. At first, however, nothing foreshadows this. Marek arrives in the forest with a school trip. He quickly separates himself from the rest of the children, after which he gives vent to his hooligan fantasy. He destroys an anthill, cuts a tree with a knife, tries to catch a spider. When he fails, he starts chasing a butterfly. He doesn't know that under this figure hides the prince of white and black magic. Wanting to punish the unruly boy, the sorcerer reduces him to the size of an insect. Mark, reduced to the size of an insect, must learn to live in completely new conditions. Kim, after being released early from prison, returns to his wife, Jola, who lives in a lonely house. Here he finds a man who claims he has been hired for hard work. Kim wants to find out if Mietek is not Jola's lover.

New cooling towers are to be built for the power station in the small village of Zaspenhain. The work is being carried out by builders from Poland, including Jerzy. Gitta, a young woman from Zaspenhain, works at the power station as a laboratory assistant. When the Polish construction workers arrive, she falls in love with Jerzy. But then the past intervenes...
