The soap opera follows the story of young Aurélia Camargo (Norma Blum), a girl who falls in love with the ambitious young journalist Fernando Seixas (Cláudio Marzo), who also falls in love with her, but rejects her when he receives an invitation to marry Adelaide (Fátima Freire), the daughter of Tavares do Amaral (Felipe Wagner), a wealthy banker. Feeling abandoned by her great love, Aurélia dreams of one day having him back. Until, when she turns 18, she is surprised with an inheritance from her grandfather, and becomes a very rich woman, allowing her to create her own rules for her life. A gang robs a factory in the State of Rio de Janeiro taking 500 million cruzeiros. In the shooting, several bandits and police are killed. The police manage to arrest some criminals involved in the robbery but do not recover the money. The mystery grows with the occurrence of some deaths clearly related to the robbery.

The naïve young Renato arrives in Rio de Janeiro from Cachoeiro de Itapemirim with the dream of becoming a doctor. Without knowing anyone, he goes to a nightclub where he is mistaken for a male prostitute by Pedro, a homosexual nurse obsessed with Greta Garbo. That same night the two go to Pedro's apartment and after several arguments, they decide to move in together. Three months later, Renato introduces his girlfriend Gracinha to his friend, who doesn't know it, but Pedro soon realizes she is a prostitute.

Carlos and Suely are a normal couple. He has some extramarital adventures and she's a standard housewife. During a Carnival, when he goes out wearing a vampire costume, Suely decides to follow a friend's advice and go for it. On Ash Wednesday, he finds her with an odalisk costume on and happier than usual.
