Baantjer is a Dutch television programme which was broadcast by RTL 4 from 6 October 1995 until 1 December 2006 for a total of 123 episodes in 12 seasons. It stars Piet Römer as Jurriaan 'Jurre' de Cock, a police detective, and Victor Reinier as Dick Vledder, his helper. The series is based on the novels of writer A. C. Baantjer. In 1999, RTL 4 broadcast the television film Baantjer, de film: De Cock en de wraak zonder einde because of the tenth anniversary of the network.

In Leeuwarden there is a real Chinese war and a brutal robbery at the cattle market. Suddenly there is that friendly rattling, asthmatic rat who provides an unexpected solution.

One day, Doctor Kroch (Henk van Ulsen) receives a chest full of gold, accompanied by a half-illegible letter pleading for help. The doctor pays no further attention to it; the patient, after all, is asking for a cure for... gold fever. When the chest is later stolen by bandits Oenk (Tabe Bas) and Boenk (John Lanting), Doctor Kroch starts to think there might be more to it after all. He decides, together with his servant Valet (Henk Molenberg), to try to find the sender of the letter, the Duke of Woestewolf (Ton van Duinhoven). During his journey, the doctor is warned by Esmeralda, a gypsy fortune-teller (Elsa Lioni). Nevertheless, he continues his journey. “Ghosts do not exist. Everything can be explained by science,” the doctor claims. But the closer he gets to Woestewolf, the stranger his adventures become.

This historical costume drama is a mini-series on the life of Flemish first-rate Baroque painter Pieter Pauwel Rubens (1577-1640), whose artistic success throughout Europe not only made him a fortune allowing him to stock his Antwerp residence ('Rubenshuis' in Dutch) and a castle at Elewijt, in the countryside nearer Brussels, with numerous fashionable treasures, but also became an ennobled diplomat for the Spanish Hapsburg rulers of the Southern Low Countries (now Belgium), who often traveled, for painting commissions and/or diplomatic missions, to and worked in Italy, France, Spain, all Catholic powers, as well as protestant England and the United Provinces (mainly Holland), also allowing him to meet other prominent contemporaries such as artists. It further covers his marriages to Isabella Brandt and Hélène Fourment.

There's an intermezzo when Schippers alias Jacques Plafond comes to play one of his 'modern' piano pieces, to the disgust of the party's guests, whose chattering in the end isn't far removed from the piano play.
