Karen McCoy is released from prison with nothing but the clothes on her back. Hiller, a computer expert, was bribed by group of bank robbers to obtain details of the security system at a newly-built bank. Having obtained the information, he thought he'd seen the last of the robbers. But now they've traced him and his son to London. They hold the son hostage and force Hiller to decode the information about the alarm and then to take part in the robbery.

Chain follows the story of well-to-do crown prosecutor Michael Cassidy, an assiduous worker and devoted family man. When he’s approached to prosecute a company embroiled in a labor dispute, he gently turns it down. Unfortunately for him, he’s in high enough demand that he can’t get out of it. As he begrudgingly sets about his duty, he realizes that the case is far bigger than he knew.

Haskell is assigned a job by his boss, the aristocratic Landon-Higgins, to highjack a high security van in broad daylight while it's in the shadow run (out of radio contact with the main security firm). He assembles a team to carry out the heist, but things don't go according to plan and Haskell begins to think his boss might be double crossing him. Add to this, a teenage boarding school pupil has already witnessed some of the meetings of the team and Haskell's in real trouble.
