The movie takes place during Russia's civil war between the Reds (Bolsheviks) and the Whites (Mensheviks). Andrejka and Yarinka are a young betrothed couple in the village of Malinovka, caught between the battle lines. Gritsian is the leader of a Menshevik band who are planning to attack the village. The invaders are leaving the northern town of the young Soviet republic. The brave underground activist Alexei Ilyutinsky infiltrates a musical troupe organized to entertain the White Army command and boost the morale of the population. The new horn player, who has no musical ear whatsoever, passes on the White Army's defense plan to the Reds and saves Bolshevik Makeev, the former chairman of the provincial executive committee, from being shot.
A story about a government clerk who has his precious new overcoat stolen. No-one seems willing to help him retrieve his prized possession, a fact that continues to concern him even when he is beyond the grave.
Summer 1947. The World War II has just died down. Unexpectedly and incognito a stranger shows up in a small village in Transcarpathia, situated near the very frontier. For some purpose he gets into a well in an oldmans Atanas yard, and when Atanas comes out, it turns out that he is not a stranger, he is Bogdan Susik (Ye.Vesnik), a former butler of a local count. He tries to understand why a former butler got into a well, and reveals a terrible secret to Atanas, on the honor to keep silence and assist him in everything. The fact is that when in 1944 the counter escaped overseas, Susik helped him to hide a chest. He is sure that the counters riches were hidden inside of the chest, and that the map with the chest location was put in the well. Now they have to find it
