The artist Bogutovsky, who lives in the captivity of false pompous art, carries the burden of past years... After hearing Illarion's story, the writer Iskra destroys the manuscript of his play: life turns out to be much more complicated than he imagined.

After working for twenty years in the village of Kalinovaya Roscha, the once energetic chairman of the collective farm, Ivan Romanyuk, "broke down" and became a bureaucrat. Natalya Kovshik, the glib-tongued chairman of the village Council, and Karp Vetrovoy, a former Black Sea sailor, join the fight with him.

The February Revolution did not bring the desired peace to the trenches. Russian and Ukrainian soldiers, deceived by Kerensky's government, are dying on the slopes of the Carpathians. But the words of Bolshevik truth penetrate the trenches, and the soldiers refuse to go to the slaughter. Among the front-line soldiers returning home is a young Ukrainian named Taras Holota. He dreams of joyful reunions, but instead attends the funeral of his mother, who was killed by the Haidamaks. The landless peasantry is starving, and Golota rallies his fellow villagers to divide up the landowners' fields...

The play is about the life of the Soviet intelligentsia in the 1930s. At the center of the performance is the talented surgeon Platon Krechet, a man whose every thought and effort is focused on prolonging human life.
