The story of an empire: From its founding in 1922 to its dissolution in 1991, the Soviet Union was shaped by revolutionary idealism, but also by oppression and decay. The USSR evolved from Stalinist terror through the Thaw under Khrushchev to political processes such as glasnost and perestroika under Gorbachev. Finally, in 1991, it collapsed.

England. The old and sick artist Symonds Kendle, fleeing from the insistent claims of his children to his remaining paintings and drawings, goes with his granddaughter Felicity to another city to a friend. But on the way the artist falls ill and ends up in a small station hotel. Felicity and Stan, the son of the innkeeper, search for boxes of Simon's paintings that have fallen into another station.

Eugénie Grandet is set in the town of Saumur. Eugénie's father Felix is a former cooper who has become wealthy through both business ventures and inheritance (having inherited the estates of his mother-in-law, grandfather-in-law, and grandmother all in one year). However, he is very miserly, and he, his wife, daughter, and their servant Nanon live in a run-down old house which he is too miserly to repair. His banker des Grassins wants Eugénie to marry his son Adolphe, and his lawyer Cruchot wants Eugénie to marry his nephew President Cruchot des Bonfons, both parties eyeing the inheritance from Felix. The two families constantly visit the Grandets to get Felix's favour, and Felix in turn plays them off against each other for his own advantage.

The Second World War has ended. With the victory in Moscow, front-line friends, Antonina, Fyodor and Alexey, move into Fyodor’s huge apartment, which was empty in the first years of the war, when his wife left him.
