From 1917 to the end of the 1980s, Soviet border guards are stationed on the territory of the USSR from the Far East to the western borders.

The main character of the film is a veteran of the Armed Forces of the USSR, the general who remained in the ranks, who once traveled from Khalkhin-Gol to Berlin, has the largest awards. A strong and reliable person who has lost his son in a war treats everyone with whom fate brings him with sympathy and understanding. One day he comes to Crimea - to those places where he used to be happy in his youth, to see the house where his family lived. There he meets an elderly woman and her two grandchildren. One of the boys, Nikolay, reminded him of his own son. The friendship begins between an adult and a child, so necessary for each of them.

The film takes us to the Far North. A criminal escapes from prison, and on his way through the tundra meets an old native man who is carriying the salaries of reindeer breeders. Their joint struggle for survival results in the spiritual purification of the protagonist.

During the Second World War a big plant in Urals region gets an order from the State Defence Committee: to double the output of the tanks T-34 within 24 hours. All physical and emotional strength of all plant workers needs to be exerted to fulfill the plan. The workers labor heroism is revealed through the story of a hereditary worker's family. His shoulders are burdened not only with a physical job, but also with responsibility for his younger son, who runs to the front without permission, not understanding that his battle-front is right here, on the plant.

Vladimir Rudnev, a VGIK graduate, newsreel cameraman, and his assistant Sashenka, assistant director of the Moscow Newsreel Studio, are filming the Red Army's combat operations during the Great Patriotic War. Not everything works out at once - they have no experience yet. From the huge stream of newsreel footage shot in the line of fire, they patiently and courageously create a portrait of their contemporaries.

The film unobtrusively, but rather sadly, reveals to the viewer what it means to love the land, the village, the collective farm and fellow villagers who seek to leave for the city at the first opportunity...

The heroine of the film is an employee of an automobile factory, a person with a whole generous character. Always ready to help those who need her help, she doesn't worry about how her personal life is going, but she's quite happy.

At the southern border outpost the Soviet border guards managed to neutralize a spy from one of the Western intelligence services and discover an electronic unit recording data about secret strategic military facilities located on the territory of the USSR.

A young, intelligent and lucky guy, nicknamed Favorite, which stuck to him during his student years, is interested in karate. The local mafia notices him and begins to promote him to the People's Deputies of the RSFSR. A girl he meets after a long separation helps the hero understand this situation. The fight for her honor develops into an open battle with a criminal group, from which the guy emerges with honor.
