Virtues of Harmony is a long-running sitcom from Hong Kong, lasting 322 episodes with two direct seasons. Produced by Tsui Yu On, the sitcom was a TVB production and aired five days a week from September 17, 2001 to December 28, 2002. The series chronicles the comical events and life of the Kam household, a rich family during a prosperous time in the Ming Dynasty of China. The series was inspired by the 2000 TVB comedy drama Colourful Life. Originally planned to be an 150-episode sitcom, an extra 200 episodes were added due to the sitcom's rating success. After the episode finale, a spin-off sequel, Virtues of Harmony II was released in 2003, as well as a spin-off musical, which starred the same cast.

To avoid all the strife caused by the gangland power struggles, Yuk Wan-lung and his elder sister Yuk Kiu-fung lead a quiet life, running an inn. Unexpectedly, Wan-lung is determined to take part in the New Hero Contest, seeking to win back his ex, Ngai Bing-bing. But when Wan-lung exposes a scandal involving the East Wing imperial guards, he is incarcerated and his sister must find a way to set him free.

Ambitious solicitor Ngo Pak-yin’s ruthless rise costs him his marriage when his wife Rebecca Tsang Bo-lam falls for kinder fellow lawyer Patrick Lui Wing-hang. But after Rebecca is mysteriously attacked and suspects Pak Yin’s involvement, he confronts his mistakes and sets out to redeem himself with a newfound heart of gold.

Jacqueline Wong, a maid in the household of the Vice Minister of War, leads an alliance of maids at the six ministries, who trade information and make money together. Roxanne Tong sold herself to be a maid to raise money for her lover to travel to the capital and take the imperial exams. Jacqueline and Roxanne take care of the Vice Minister's first wife and second wife (Angie Cheung), respectively, and fight against each other on behalf of their mistresses. Jacqueline and the young master fall in love, but they are oppressed by his father. Timothy is demoted after committing an offense. Tony is determined to achieve honors from the imperial exam and restore the family's reputation. Lisa Lau, the daughter of the Minister of War (Pat Poon), sets her eyes on Brian and tries to seduce him. Jacqueline and Roxanne worry that they will lose their lovers if they achieve a high rank in the imperial exams, and vow to ruin their scholarly dreams. As the two pairs of lovers are about to break up, they get embroiled in a treasonous conspiracy.
