Guerra de Canudos is a 1997 Brazilian film, of the drama genre, directed by SĂ©rgio Rezende. It was shown in miniseries format on TV Globo, between December 16 and December 19, 1997, in 4 chapters, replacing "DecadĂŞncia", and being replaced by "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands", being the first time that the broadcaster adapted the exhibition of a feature film in this format, an expedient that became be used more frequently since then.
In VitĂłria, the middle-age piano teacher Gertrudes sublets her apartment to two younger women, the unstable LĂşcia and the nurse Madalena. Gertrudes misses and daydreams her former love and has a motherhood relationship with LĂşcia; Madalena has a promiscuous life, having one night stand with the most different men every day and her behavior is criticized by Gertreudes; and LĂşcia is dreamer that manipulates Gertrudes and expects that the handyman Alfredo becomes her prince charming. Their conflictive relationship ends when Madalena discloses their inner feelings and secrets to each other.
At the end of the 19th century, a poor family comes to the rural Canudos, a community led by AntĂ´nio Conselheiro, seen by many as a holy prophet. Their ways bother the powerful people of the region, and the newly founded Republic sends their army to destroy the settlement, which culminates in one of the bloodiest wars in the history of Brazil.
The real story of Carlos Lamarca, a captain who, during the military dictatorship in Brazil, deserted Brazilian Army and got involved in left-wing guerilla groups, becoming one of their most prominent leaders.
