Crazy Hormones – Men and Women in the Menopause
5.5

Virtually every woman who enters menopause has questions about what’s happening to her body and how to effectively deal with the changes. The broad availability of medicines, remedies and even hormones even conveys the concept that menopause as a curable “deficiency disorder”. This documentary takes a look at the scientific and medical contexts of menopause as well as the latest findings in international research. Are artificial hormones medically necessary or a seductive, supposed fountain of youth? Do they truly assist in alleviating the suffering of women, or are they lifestyle drugs reflecting a zeitgeist in which ageing is no longer acceptable and older people are seen as “flawed”? A visual and provoking science documentary about the hot time of menopause that also takes a look at whether and how the hormones in men likewise go crazy.

As a Bauhaus photographer, Lucia Moholy (1894-1989) was a pioneer of New Objectivity. Her husband László Moholy-Nagy was appointed to the Bauhaus in 1923. They worked there together and László became famous as the inventor of the photogram, a photo without film. Lucia's contribution to this only became known later. When the Czech-born Jew was forced to leave Germany in 1933 after the Nazis seized power, she was unable to take her most important possession, her glass negatives, with her. She struggled to keep her head above water in London and worked for the British secret service on the microfilming of valuable documents. With her vision of microfilm as freely accessible information for all, she is now regarded as a pioneer of the Internet. After the war, Lucia set out in search of her glass negatives.

Last year, Marion (48) wrote a letter to God for New Year. She no longer wanted to be alone. May he send her a man who will protect and love her. A man with the blood of a knight. And then she found Rudi (48). The problem: he was in prison. After six visits and 59 letters from him, they both say: it's love. He is due to be released in a year and a half. Then he wants to move in with her in northern Germany. We follow the couple as they move from prison to freedom: when they visit him behind bars, when he goes out for the first time in open prison, when the problems begin. Does he have an alcohol and gambling problem or not? Will he be released early or will he give up everything? What is it like when love that began behind bars meets reality? What problems and limits will the two of them encounter? A long-term observation over a year and a half. Can love move mountains?
