The film takes place in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku at the end of the 1980s. At this time, the Soviet Union was starting to fall apart, and with this came the start of a number of ethnic conflicts. Fariz and his family move into a Baku apartment block from war-torn Nagorno-Karabakh. Fariz's relations with his new neighbors are strained by his accusations that it was people like them who failed to support the Azeris in their conflict with ethnic Armenians. The only one who stands up to him is Alik, who acts as peacemaker between him and the older inhabitants of the building. Alik has no reservations about brandishing his gun in order to keep the peace. One day, the apartment managers want to evict a number of musicians who have been squatting in the basement. Alik gets involved, but soon discovers the situation is more complicated that he first believed.

The film tells the story of journalistic morality in an analytical way. In this sense, the journalist must have a clear conscience and morality. He must find the answer to the question: "What is the meaning of life and what have I been able to do for people?" The protagonist of the film, Zaur is a radio journalist. Throughout the plot, he seeks the answer to this question, but finds it difficult to find the answer, and the complex contrasts of life confuse him.

The plot of film is constructed on the basis of memoirs of the son and mother. They were divided with border between northern and southern Azerbaijan.

The film chronicles the ordeals faced by Azerbaijan’s intellectuals - from the Red Terror to the present day - depicting how, amid shifting social and political upheavals, they endure physical and moral persecution. The movie reflects the ecological environment of Sumgayit. After the collapse of the Soviet power, the old problems of the "new era" still persist. Although it is not mentioned in the movie, the new generation of people living in this city, which is named as Sumgayit, especially near poisonous plants, are born crippled and sick. There is a wide range of symbolic expressions in the film and there are interesting dream scenes.

The film is a biographical true story about life of Imadaddin Nasimi, well known throughout the East for his school of philosophy and thought, poems and promotion of moral values in a feudal society. During the 14th-15th centuries, when Azerbaijan was a stage for warring powers and civil wars, Nasimi was the only poet committed to promotion of humanism and moral values inflicting criticism on the ruling system and the society itself. For his intruding role in feudal regimes, Nasimi lived a complex and tragic life.

Young border guard Sergeant Farrukh is in love with Izran, a girl from a neighboring village. Izran's father does not believe in the seriousness of the young man's intentions and forbids his daughter from seeing him. But after seeing Farrukh in action, arresting border violators, he changes his attitude towards the border guard. Farrukh pursues the violator. A landslide drives them both into a ravine. The violator tells him about his life, and the sergeant recognizes him as his father, whom he believed had died at the front...
