Frank Byrne was forcibly removed from his mother Maudie at the age of 5 and has been searching and yearning for her almost all of his life.

In Jandamarra's War, we learn how in the 1890's the European colonialists arrive in the Kimberley with vast herds of sheep and cattle, determined to make their fortune by feeding a rapidly growing population in the South. But the settlers soon discover they are in land populated with indigenous tribes, ready to fight the red-faced invaders.

An old woman, overseeing her granddaughter making some damper, is asked how she came to be betrothed or “promised” at a young age.

Produced in association with Waringarri Aboriginal Arts at Kununurra in Western Australia, this moving documentary features three women who talk about their paintings as an expression of their relationship to their country. The women share a sense of belonging to their place and express this belonging through dance and song and all of their artistic expressions. On a trip into the bush around Cockatoo Lagoon near Kununurra, they explain the stories of their Dreaming and of their land, and talk of their own experiences growing up as workers on stations in the area. Each artist talks about why they paint - to teach and to share stories about their country with others in the community and wider afield. The film also observes them working on paintings, each giving her personal interpretation of a loved environment and a living culture. The paintings are all very different in style but all express a life-affirming sense of identity intimately linked to their own country.

Fifty years ago an Indigenous Classical Orchestra was formed at the Derby Leprosarium, Playing Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and even Handel. This curious ensemble lifted the spirits of all who were there. This is the story of the journey that some surviving members of the orchestra take back to the medical institution.

Jandamarra's campaign against white settlers in the Kimberleys in the north of Western Australia in the 1880s remains a source of pride and inspiration for the Bunuba people. A book, a play, and now a documentary film, are helping to bring the story to a wider audience and a new generation of Bunuba people. A feature film is also in development.
