Jane is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish landowner. She is disowned and expelled from his estates, but although she settles down to a new life in London, she is still haunted by the memory of her childhood and her mother's mysterious death. In a trance, she sets out on dreamlike journeys in search of freedom and revenge.

The film follows five years in the life of a young girl as she struggles against an onslaught of good intentions. From her first encounter with the social care system, through a range of foster placements, to a haunting climax, we are challenged to question how it is that so many well-intentioned people can do so much unintended damage. 25 year old estate agent Suzy Lamplugh was reported missing at 18:45 on 28th July 1986. Investigations have so far not identified any evidence and although leads have been followed, some as recently as 2019, her disappearance remains a mystery. She is presumed murdered and was declared legally dead in 1994. No body has ever been found. The last clue to Lamplugh's whereabouts was an appointment to show a house in Shorrolds Road to someone she referred to as "Mr Kipper".
