A sincere provincial young man, Frantisek Koudelka leaves to work in Prague. For the trip he buys a computer made horoscope with biorhythms charts, marked according to his date of birth, there are trappy, precarious, unsuccessful and even critical days and few successful days. The clumsy luckless person Frantisek has finally a guidance for his life.
A petrol pump is run by a permanent team: the manager Vávra, a former civil engineer ing. Stejskal, a smug crook named Karafa, and an old man, Dvořák, who is about to retire. They have a well-developed system that allows them to divert part of the profits into their own pockets. The only one who wants nothing to do with the crooked business is old Dvorak, who one day will find another job. Into this situation comes a young man, Zdeněk Černý, as a new employee. He's inquisitive and works quickly. He also understands the profit-sharing system. He soon inspires confidence in Vávra and the others, but soon starts to assert his right to an equal share of the profits...
An old bachelor in a studio apartment wakes up from his chair. The TV is on, but only static is visible. While switching channels, where nothing is being broadcast, he finds a station where a man is reading from a book. What starts as innocent reading to help him sleep peacefully turns into a nightmare.
In the fairy tale comedy, a strange princess is born. She can be wound up like a mechanical toy. At first glance, this seems like a certain advantage, because if such a child is naughty, the parents simply won't wind them up. But when adolescence arrives and with it first love, it's not so simple. After all, Princess Marenka also had quite a few problems with her "peculiarity".
It is 5 May 1945 and the uprising against the hated German occupiers has broken out in Prague. The Czech guards open the gate of the Pankrác prison to allow the prisoners to escape en masse. Many of them are shot dead by the German guards but young Ruda (Jaromír Hanzlík) manages to run away. He is taken care of by one of the Prague fighters, concierge Kytka. Kytka hides him in the flat of the house's owner where only the young maid Karla (Jana Brejchová) is left, ordering her to take care of Ruda.
The military airfield crew are not allowed to leave the area because alert level two has been declared. All walks have been cancelled and Private Standa Urban is looking forward to meeting his girlfriend who has come to visit him. His friends from the infirmary are sympathetic and conspiratorially organise the whole event...
The hero of the story is a forty-something intellectual, a sensitive composer of classical music. His exclusive profession, his work, which is actually incomprehensible to those around him, and his deep inner passion set him apart from the conformist milieu. Therefore, he tries to search for the "lark's silence" - a new strength, purity, truth, essence and roots of Czechism. However, on his return from the oppressive, alienated big city to his native village, to his former home, to nature, a deep disillusionment awaits him: he discovers that the once idyllic village has lost not only its face, but also any manifestation of spiritual life in its foolish attempt to resemble the city.
