A young boy’s infatuation with flight is the subject of Vláčil’s poetic, prize-winning early short, made for the Czechoslovak Army’s film unit.
A film documenting preparations for the 11th Sokol festival – from training in gyms throughout the country to practical issues concerning the organisation of the event. It shows how accommodation, catering, and transport in Prague were dealt with during the festival as well as how it was necessary to refurbish a stadium for it. It counts the numbers of workers and tons of material. It shows crowds heading to the stadium and it ends with the opening ceremony for the event.

In order to attain the highest levels of excellence, its workers carry out regular selection procedures in which only the best heads make the grade. They assign a table for each cow, recording yield and checking whether it meets the required standards.
In the Škoda factory, where they are feverishly rearming in 1914, works the foreman Kalina, the father of the young men Pavel and Jan. Pavel is a supporter of the monarchy, while Jan, on the contrary, defends the idea of our national independence. Just before mobilization, Jan escapes to Russia, where he joins a group of volunteer legionnaires called the "Czech Company", fighting against the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Pavel enlists in the Austrian army. The brothers do not meet again until July 1917 in the battle of Zborov in Ukraine, which marked a successful breakthrough of the Austro-Hungarian front.

This two-partfilm was made in connection with the visit of Soviet collective farmers to agricultural cooperative in Mělnické Vtelno. They come to share with local people the experiences they have gained in cultivating crops and raising livestock. Among others, the visitors include Praskovya Andreyevna Malininova, who demonstrates a three-stage udder massage for increasing milk yields in cows.
