Rocky is looked down upon by his father and spends all his time in a mechanic shop. Problems arise in his life after he falls in love with Gayathri.

A happy-go-lucky youngster falls in love with his wealthy classmate. However, the girl's mother is opposed to their relationship and arranges her wedding with a gangster's son.

Moorthy is a lorry driver, who lives with his mother Ramaatha and often confronts the criminal Govindan. Moorthy and Uma fall in love with each other. One day, her father has a heart attack, when Moorthy and Uma rush him to the hospital the roads were blocked by a local political party. Her father unfortunately dies, the angry Moorthy clashes with the political party leader Sigamani in public. Later, Govindan joins his party and stands in election as well as Moorthy. In the meantime, Moorthy and Uma get married. The corrupt politician Sigamani orders to kill Govindan and blames the innocent Moorthy. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Sage Narada instigates Goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvathi against each other. The trio set out to answer what is paramount in a man's life, knowledge, wealth or strength.

Viswanath (Rajnikanth), a famous lawyer, stays with his widowed mother (Vijayakumari) and physically handicapped sister (Uma). He sends Jegan, a rich magnate's son (Sathyaraj) and Lokaiya, two criminals to jail on the charge of rape and murder of an innocent girl. Jagan’s father, GMK (M N Nambiar) uses his influence and starts creating trouble in Viswanath’s life. GMK succeeds in getting Viswanath imprisoned on a trumped up charge. His heartbroken mother dies. Once out of jail, Viswanath sets out to punish the culprits when he temporarily loses his eyesight.

Madhavan, a lawyer and the breadwinner of his family, finds it difficult to enjoy his married life due to his family's issues.
