Maverick underground American/Lebanese musician and ethnomusicologist Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls and Sublime Frequencies), lands as a stranger in Cairo, soon after the 2011 uprisings, and teams up with three young Egyptian musicians for the translation of his old songs into Arabic. Under Bishop’s mentorship, this unlikely collaboration transforms into a band, The Invisible Hands.

A site-specific audiovisual installation commissioned by the Syros International Film Festival and conceived by filmmaker and visual artist Marina Gioti, focusing on the ceremonial launch of a new vessel, compiling a montage of mid-century archival footage from Greek and international newsreels aiming to bring an international anachronism face to face with the present moment.

The film presents the results of this experiment as a collection of visual evidence from an Athens of the near future devoid of humans. Its inhabitants have mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind a tableau mourant of reinforced concrete, metal and plastic debris coexisting with glorious marble and the local flora and fauna. Part science fiction, part archaeological mystery, the work offers a picturesque expedition of the new Greek ruins, through an apposition of findings that serve as hints for the unknown fate of the film’s elusive protagonists: the -conspicuous by absence- Athenians.
