Biography

Throughout his career, Palito directed nine feature films, most of them focusing on the period of violence that Peru experienced between 1980 and 2000. His films have been screened in various venues in Ayacucho, Lima, and at international film festivals, and he has received numerous awards and accolades. Palito Ortega attended school in Huamanga and at the Colegio Guadalupe in Lima. He returned to Ayacucho, where he studied anthropology at the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga. His early work consisted of documentaries for tourism purposes, projects for television channels, and reports and documentaries related to acts of violence commissioned by non-governmental organizations. In 1994, he premiered his first film, "Dios tarda pero no olvida" (God Takes His Time But Doesn't Forget), which ran for two months in Ayacucho due to its large audience.

Not even the indifference of the city serves as protection. After Pedro's murder by the military, the complaint filed by his father is unsuccessful. However, the man finds the solidarity of two members of the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso, who try to recruit him and his family to join the organization. Although they reject the proposal, the intelligence service members assume the opposite and make the father disappear. His wife and son search for him unsuccessfully in different police stations and barracks. They also ask the bishop of the city for help, but he justifies military actions in response to terrorist acts.

The legend of the Jajacha has been passed down from generation to generation. Ortega Matute spoke to people who were told about it by their parents, who had been told the tale by their parents. He also listened to accounts from people who say they’ve seen the demon with their own eyes.

Adrian is returning to his home with Juan de Dios when a police patrol stops him for a routine search. Tthe police take him into custody as a presumed terrorist on the basis of subversive messages coming from the radio. He is branded as a terrorist and a fugitive from the law. In the days that follow more than a dozen soldiers raid his home and he is taken to the dreaded Pink House where he will be cruelly tortured.

December 1987. Alfonso owns a grocery store in Huamanga. His nephews Cirilo and Pepito help him in the business. The city of Ayacucho is under a political-military command and a curfew is in effect from seven at night until six in the morning. One day, Alfonso is forced by a Shining Path militant to deliver a package of dynamite to a man waiting for him in the plaza. Alfonso tries to resist, but is threatened with death. He makes the delivery; however, he is observed by a member of the Army Intelligence Service. That night, Alfonso is arrested at his home by the armed forces.
