Hezar-Dastan was an Iranian epic historical drama television series from 1987, developed and directed by Ali Hatami. Hezar Dastan is considered one of the most important and most influential works of art in the history of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting. The production of the show took almost 8 years, starting in 1979 and ending in 1987, during which Hatami established a large set to represent Tehran in both Qajar dynasty and World War II, retroactively creating Iran's first movie studio and backlot (named Ghazali Cinema Town). The show tells the story of Reza Khoshnevis (also known as Reza Tofangchi), and his life and entanglement with corruption in government, and trying to correct it using not conventional means. The story is split into two section and it features Iran during the turbulent times of the latter days of Qajar Dynasty and during the events of World War II and Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran.

"Ali," who must become a doctor according to his mother's wishes, participates in the entrance exam year after year against his own will and fails each time. Eventually, he decides to find a way to escape this situation and marry his ideal girl. So, he pretends to be insane. Although this stops him from becoming a doctor, it leads to the girl's father opposing Ali's marriage. Feeling hopeless and exhausted, Ali eventually meets a woman who also catches his father's attention. The father uses various tricks to keep him away from home so that he can marry the woman himself.
Mehdi is madly in love with Goli; he follows her everywhere and, because of jealousy, murders Goli’s fiancée, Amir. Goli in search of Amir is confronted with Mehdi and raped. Mehdi is arrested and convicted, but because of lack of evidence he is released and again begins to hurt Goli.

Samad becomes fascinated with Bruce Lee and karate after watching the karate movie, and after returning to the village, he tries to teach the villagers karate by imitating Bruce Lee's martial arts moves.

A six-year-old girl (Maryam) who has lost her family in the war, is living in an orphanage. She likes a woman called Fereshteh who lives in a house in front of the orphanage.
