Procol Harum: Live at the Union Chapel is a record of the final performance of the band's 2003 world tour, taped on December 12 before a small London crowd. The venue was an inspired choice. As a performance space, the Gothic church is at once both intimate and grand, a perfect mirror for the band's odd but cogent mix of bar-band boogie and classically tinged prog rock. The 21-song concert includes eight selections from The Well's on Fire, Procol Harum's 2003 studio album. Most of the newer songs are strong (particularly "The Question" and "An Old English Dream"), and the band, having honed its arrangements to a T, does an exceptional job of blending its recent music with its older material. Singer-pianist Gary Brooker and organist Matthew Fisher, both original members, lead the way through time-honored favorites like "Homburg," "Conquistador," and their immortal 1967 hit "A Whiter Shade of Pale."
Pioneering British band Procol Harum takes the stage in Copenhagen in 2001 and delivers a powerhouse performance of their best tunes, including hits "A Whiter Shade of Pale," "Grand Hotel" and "Pandora's Box." Gary Brooker and company also play "Holding On," "Wizard Man," "Beyond the Pale," "As Strong as Samson," "Conquistador" and "Bringing Home the Bacon." The program also features an inside look at the band in rehearsal.
1992 reunion concert with The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Da Camera Singers to mark the 20th anniversary of Procol Harum's legendary 1972 concert album. There are two versions of this video in circulation. The complete version was shown only once, on Canadian pay-per-view television. Subsequent repeat broadcasts were the edited version with the following songs removed: Homburg, Whaling Stories, Shine On Brightly and King of Hearts.
This DVD was filmed over two spectacular concerts held in the grounds of Ledreborg Castle in Denmark in August 2006. The band was accompanied throughout by the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir and these epic songs really benefit from the full symphonic arrangements they receive.
With the untimely passing of frontman Stuart Adamson in 2001, the title Final Fling couldn't be more sadly appropriate. This two-disc set captures Big Country toward the beginning and near the end of their 20-year career. The first disc features a 1988 performance from an outdoor peace concert in East Berlin, shortly before the release of Peace in Our Time (and before the Berlin Wall came down in 1989). It's a straightforward, electric set played in front of a huge, enthusiastic crowd during the twilight hours. The second disc finds the Scottish rockers back at their old stomping grounds, Glasgow's Barrowlands, while on their Driving to Damascus tour with the Alarm in 2000. They may look older, but their chiming twin-guitar attack is as passionate and rousing as ever. Both sets include such fan favorites as "Look Away," "Fields of Fire," and Top 40 hit "In a Big Country." --Kathleen C. Fennessy
