Andris, the film's protagonist, may have said his first words into a phone receiver. And for good reason: his father calls to check on his health, his mother calls to give him instructions about his lunch. Is it any wonder that Andris also makes friends over the phone?

Mary is a young librarian in a factory library. She lives alone with her mother. Encouraged by her mother, she tries to find the right man by advertising. The candidates are: an agronomist, a foreign trader, a police reporter, a teacher, a rural journalist. The classifieds are not successful, but strangely enough, Mary is strengthened in her belief that one cannot be alone in the world.
