In 1990s Rio de Janeiro, 11-year-old Araí develops an obsession with an imaginary killer who attacks girls in their neighborhood. At first determined to capture him, little by little Araí starts to understand, and eventually, to identify with the villain.
Cocoa is a black woman married to a white man. Within her routine, she faces her memories and, in a dreamlike context, memories deal with past moments of oppression.
Finding shelter in an abandoned mansion, a group faces the challenges of coexistence. Free from traditional power structures, the black women experience power, love, and the possibility of dreaming about the future, while the white women resist learning to help with household chores, take care of themselves, and face their mistakes. When an old threat resurfaces, however, they all must band together to survive.
At eleven years old, Ana flees in enigmatic circumstances and, with no other option, is sheltered in the republic where her older sister lives with three other young women. Between sinks of dirty dinnerware, packets of instant noodles, colored glitter, beer bottles and Swedish films, Ana learns some important lessons. And in the process wins a new family.
