Amateur dirt-bikers Rien and Hans–and their mechanic Eef–each fall in love with Fientje, a young woman who, with her brother Jaap, works a concession stand at the races. Dory, Nico's first wife, is pregnant. The father of the child is Simon, Lea's father. Nico has fallen into crisis and decides to resign as hospital director. He retreats to the farm where he hid during the war. Hans, Nico's best friend, is married to Pien. After fathering seven children, he flees this marriage. Nico's father, Zwart, increasingly isolates himself from the world; he reads and rereads the camp letters from his first wife.

An idealistic Dutch colonial officer posted to Indonesia in the 19th century is cohvinced that he can make the kinds of changes that will actually help the local people he is in charge of, but circumstances soon make him realize just how out of touch he really is, and it doesn't take long for things to go from bad to worse.

A young Amsterdam lawyer seems to be doing well, but occasionally he is overwhelmed by an unstoppable need for booze. During one of his delirious episodes, he witnesses the death of a squatter at a police station. Worried about his career, he hesitates to speak out.

Nico and Leo are getting married. Their entire family and both their exes are in attendance. Some of these are performing musical numbers on stage. But memories of the war and the fact that Leo's mother died in a concentration camp keeps coming to the forefront.

The film is set in a signalman's house during the German occupation. When it turns out that the mother has committed adultery with a German, things start to go downhill for the father. Germans take over his land, and his children fend for themselves.

A young sailor learns that his friend has died of a heroin overdose. He watches the 8mm films he has made of his friend and discovers that he keeps the world at a distance from behind his camera.
