The press gets excited about a girl from a fish factory who accidentally wins the Girl of the Week beauty contest and writes an imaginative story about her as a millionaire heiress. Soon, the factory manager's son and socialites who want a share of her publicity are competing for her attention.

Mirja finds her grandmother's old hat in the attic and sets off singing along the road with it on her head. On her journey, she meets composer couple Theodor and Thea Tekonen and gets a ride from hat maker Kosonen and his son Ilmari, who falls in love with Mirja. However, the girl continues her journey alone and, with the help of the circus troupe leader, gets to perform at Linnanmäki, where Ilmari finds her again.

The story is set in Helsinki's revue theater Punainen Mylly, run by Jalmari Haapala with Erkki Pajula as its lead singer. Between performances, dancer Kaarina and doctor Kalle are offered the chance for romance, despite some misunderstandings.

The S/S Vellamo heads to Alexandria with Kaarina, the daughter of the ship's owner Hallerman, on board. As Kaarina trades places with the family's housekeeper Marja, first mate Yrjö takes a liking to Marja whom he believes to be miss Hallerman. Meanwhile Kaarina, pretending to be a member of the cleaning staff, starts getting close with lower ranking officer Kalle Aaltonen.

Pertti works as telegraph operator on a ship. The ship arrives in Helsinki and Pertti looks forward to meet his mother and the neighbor girl, who he is in love. But his plans change, when he steps into a restaurant with the first officer of the ship on the first ashore.
