After the young man is arrested and subsequently breaks out of prison, the two decide to go on the run. As they plan and move forward with their escape, the police hunt them at every turn. Habibollah Khan and his daughter Maliheh complain to Amir about his nephew Hashem. Hashem, a close friend of Amir and delaying his marriage to Maliheh, is involved in a devious plot. Amir, engaged to marry Azar and a driver for a mining company, carries the miners’ wages to the mine at the end of each month.

Towards the end of the Shahanshah's reign, Sergeant Makvandi is assigned the commander of the gendarmerie station in a small town. A stern disciplinarian, Sergeant Makvandi tries to impose order at the station but, being as degenerate as his subordinates, he fails to re-store discipline. faced by rebellious crowds, he imposes martial law, but people outwit him by mailing to his address a forged letter which "promotes the sergeant and ends the curfew". Makvandi tries to intimidate a school teacher into writing a song which he wants the students to sing on the day his "promotion" comes into effect. But the teacher refuses to give in, for he and his students are preparing to sing a new song, the song of revolution.

Amir and Maryam plan to get married, but Maryam’s car crashes into a ravine, and newspapers report her as dead. Maryam’s cousin, Zari, who has feelings for Amir, secretly brings letters that Maryam writes to Amir and tries to get close to him. Maryam returns and discovers that Amir and Zari have developed feelings for each other. However, after learning of Maryam’s survival, Amir marries her, and they become parents to a child shortly after. Zari marries a wealthy man and, with the help of her broker, Bahram, schemes to obtain her husband’s wealth. Zari’s husband dies of a heart attack, and Amir is falsely accused of being the murderer by Zari.
