Usman's son Nirmal, identifies the cause of the pollution as the large chemical factory which his father had been campaigning against most of his life. Disturbed by his father's death, Nirmal takes refuge in the fables and images his father had left him with, during their wanderings in the village. His fantasy world merges with reality when he meets a mermaid in the carnival which is visiting the village.
