The little orphan Lazarus is expelled from his home, flees from the master who takes him in and mistreats him, and arrives in a village that is in dispute with another neighboring village over the possession of a Virgin.

First film adaptation of the play by Enrique Pérez Escrich. Angela's brother is the most important bandit in Salamanca and is killed by Angela's husband. She does not say that he is her brother, and her husband believes that he was her lover, so the child she is waiting for is abandoned in the house of the village priest.
